The Most Rented Movie In 2017 Is A Surprise

If you had to guess what the most rented movie was last year, what would you say? You might think back to all the biggest movies of 2017, like IT, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Beauty and the Beast or Thor: Ragnarok. But all of those guesses would miss the mark. The truth is that the most rented movie last year was a film that didn't even come out last year. It was released in 2016, and that is the Ben Affleck action movie, The Accountant.

Did you see that one coming? Indeed, the most rented movie last year wasn't some huge blockbuster comic book movie or sequel to a name property, but an action film starring Ben Affleck as a deadly math nerd. Coming in second behind The Accountant on the rental front was Moana, and then Wonder Woman. These stats come from The Hollywood Reporter, citing the MPAA's annual report, which has for the first time included home entertainment. These rental stats are based on digital rentals of movies, not physical rentals. That's not terribly surprising since most people would have to do some serious searching to find a video rental store, and digital is now the preferred rental format. So these are rentals you might make through your cable provider or a service like Amazon or Vudu. It is also worth noting that these stats reflect paid rentals, and not films included as streaming options, like on Netflix.

These top three rentals are interesting, and there are probably a lot of factors that helped them find their way to the top of the list. It's not terribly surprising that a 2016 release topped the charts since 2017 films wouldn't have been available for rental the whole year. The Accountant was released in late 2016, so it was probably available for the majority of last year to rent digitally and had more time to rack up the numbers. Director Gavin O'Connor's movie made $155.1 million at the worldwide box office and was a relative hit given its budget. However there were many people who didn't see it in theaters. The Accountant is definitely the exact kind of movie you rent; a fun action movie that you didn't see in theaters and don't want to buy outright, but still want to watch during a night in.

The musical Moana also likely benefitted from being released the year before, and as a kids movie was probably something parents could quickly rent and throw on to entertain the little ones. Wonder Woman was a huge box office success, and as a June theatrical release, it wasn't even available on digital until the end of August. So it had less than half the year, and Patty Jenkins' brilliant film still drew in enough audiences to claim a bronze medal in the movie rental race.

We already know that Warner Bros. is moving ahead with The Accountant 2, with Ben Affleck set to return, and I imagine the performance of the first film on digital over the past year has only affirmed that this is a good decision. John Cena's Blockers Movie Is Giving Out Free Tickets

If you're reading CinemaBlend right now, there's a good chance that you love movies. What's one thing better than a movie? A free movie. That's something cinephiles have known for a long time, and to capitalize on that love, John Cena's upcoming comedy Blockers is actually giving away free tickets. Don't worry, we have all of the information that you will need.

With the April 6 release of Blockers looming, Universal has officially commenced the major marketing push to get the movie in front of as many eyes as possible. To accomplish that end, the studio is giving out free Blockers tickets to select audiences in cities all over the country. Availability, location and time will vary depending on who you are and where you're from, but if you are a fan of comedy, then this looks like an event that you likely won't want to miss. You can head to Universal Screenings to get more information about the screenings and the tickets.

Blockers centers its story on three parents (John Cena, Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz) who take it upon themselves to prevent their teenage children from losing their virginities on prom night. Not only is it the latest comedic effort from three well-known and popular comedic leads (between films like Trainwreck and Sisters, Cena has proven himself as a particularly fun and unexpected comedic force), but it's also the directorial debut for Kay Cannon. Up to this point, Cannon has become largely known for her role as the screenwriter of the Pitch Perfect franchise, so it will almost certainly prove interesting to see how she evolves as she steps into the director's chair. Blockers is already generating some insane buzz based off of the early reviews (it has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is almost unheard of in the realm of raunchy comedies), so these tickets are likely going to be worth it.

Warner Bros. and DC have a hit on their hands with Aquaman, which is officially the highest grossing movie in the DCEU. The solo adventure takes place after the events of 2017's Justice League, yet none of the other heroes pop in for a cameo. This was obviously very intentional. Here's what director James Wan said when asked if he ever considered having anyone else from the Justice League appear in Aquaman.

No, I just feel like this is his standalone movie, just let it be about Aquaman. I feel like all the other characters have had so many movies; audiences have known all the other characters in all the other movies, all these different projects. Let this be Aquaman's time in the spotlight.

Being a connected cinematic universe, members of the Justice League show up in each other's movies from time to time. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice basically introduced all the heroes. Suicide Squad had a cameo from Flash and Batman. Wonder Woman had a letter from Bruce Wayne, if you want to count that, but otherwise Wonder Woman ran the show on her own.

However, Aquaman is the first DCEU movie after Justice League, which wasn't a smooth experience for the studio. People were curious how much or little Aquaman would reference the events and characters of that movie. It opted to go as little as possible, but for good reason.

James Wan told HuffPost that Superman, Batman, or any of the members of the Justice League don't show up in Aquaman because it would take the spotlight away from Arthur Curry. All the members of the League have had many of their own movies or TV shows at this point, but Aquaman has never had one all to himself. This is his first movie, so why not let him be the only superhero and get the attention he deserves?

I'd say that's good reasoning for not having any Justice League cameos in the movie. In the MCU, outside of post-credits scenes, most heroes usually don't cameo in each other's movies. If they do, it's for a more substantial role like Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming or everyone in Captain America: Civil War.

Additionally, Aquaman doesn't really address any of the events of the DCEU. There's literally one throwaway line about defeating Steppenwolf and then it's off to the undersea races. I think that was for the best, and it'll be interesting to see how Shazam! handles its connections to the DCEU.

Disney's New Streaming Service May Finally Have A Name

Disney has spoken about their forthcoming streaming service a lot, but one thing they've neglected to do is give it a name. We've just been referring to as the Disney Streaming Service whenever it's talked about, but it may actually have a name which Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed. He, at least, is not calling it the Disney Streaming Service. He calls it Disney Play.

While no official announcement has been made regarding what the name of the new service will be, Variety points out that Disney's top guy is referring to the service as Disney Play. He used the term during a recent Disney earnings call, which would seem to indicate that it's either the current name of the system internally or simply a name that Iger himself likes. Of course, if the boss likes the name, there's a decent chance that means the name could end up being the actual name of the service.

Although, without any real indication, it's also possible that Bob Iger is using the name specifically because it isn't what the streaming service will be called. It's a way to refer to the service by a short and clear title without revealing what it will actually be called before it's time to reveal the name. It's certainly easier than calling it the Disney Streaming Service all the time.

Disney Play is a decent name, though it's one that seems a little unoriginal. The Starz cable channel, which Disney has an existing deal with, uses that name for its streaming element and, of course, Google uses that name for its entire online store. I would honestly expect something a bit more original from Disney.

Disney Play is one of the more hotly anticipated new online products in recent memory. Following Disney's major acquisitions in recent years including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and most recently 21st Century Fox, Disney simply has the largest library of any major studio which potentially makes the new Disney service incredibly attractive to consumers. While it is clear that not all of Disney's major titles will be available on day one, existing deals mean that some Disney products will be licensed elsewhere for an undisclosed period of time, it does seem like eventually, the service will be the only place to find things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anything from Star Wars. In addition to the existing material, a number of original movies and TV series are being produced.

Disney has a massive existing fan base it seems like a no-brainer that the majority of them will be jumping into Disney Play pretty much at day one. The service is expected to launch somewhere in the second half of 2019, though an exact date has yet to be revealed.
