Universal Studios Is Getting A Secret Life Of Pets Attraction

Theme parks are never finished and there's always going to be something new on the horizon. While it used to be that theme park attractions came long after movie properties had shown long term viability, that's frequently not the case anymore. The Secret Life Of Pets has become the newest example of that, as the title will be getting its own attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood, an announcement that comes two months before the movie sequel is set to debut.

The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash will open at Universal's Southern California theme park sometime in 2020. While only a few details about the ride were revealed, one very interesting one is that it will actually be an attraction that actually uses ride vehicles on a track. With so many new attractions at multiple theme parks being focused on 3D glasses and screens, its nice to see the occasional traditional dark ride still show up now and then.

However, it sounds like the plan for The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash is to make more than simply a traditional dark ride, it's being called an immersive experience, which is an oft used phrase with theme parks these days, that will see guests in the role of stray puppies, that will join Secret Life of Pets characters, Max, Snowball, and more, as everybody tries to find a permanent home.

There's no question that The Secret Life of Pets was a very successful movie. It grossed over $875 million at the box office in 2016 and spawned the sequel that will be out in June. It's far from shocking Universal Studios jumped on this one. The Secret Life of Pets did better at the box office than the first Despicable Me movie, and that franchise also spawned a Universal Studios attraction before it spawned two successful sequels and an even more successful spinoff.

And speaking of Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, the new Secret Life of Pets attraction will make its home right next door to its fellow Illumination property, between it and the Minion themed Super Silly Fun Land play area. That area currently contains a few Despicable Me themed food and merchandise locations. I reached out to Universal Studios Hollywood and have confirmed that the new attraction won't require the closure of any of the existing locations, even temporarily.

Even though the park may not have all the space in the world, it's doing a great job dedicating a nice little corner of the park to Illumination. One wonders if an attraction dedicated to Sing, a movie that also made more than a half billion dollars, and has a sequel on the way, might be getting its own theme park show before long.

I would expect to see The Secret Life Of Pets: Off The Leash in about 12 months time, give or take as it will likely arrive before the summer vacation rush hits Universal Studios Hollywood.

Tom Hanks On Realizing At Disneyland That Toy Story Is So Iconic

Disneyland and Disney World are places filled with magic and wonderment for kids and Disney bounding and food for adults. However, if you are a person who actually voices an animated character for the company, going to the Disney Parks can be a very different experience. Just ask Tom Hanks, who recently revealed he actually realized at Disneyland just how iconic his animated series Toy Story is.

Obviously when you think about iconic Pixar movies Toy Story comes to mind, but the importance of the film to the brand and to millions of fans everywhere didnt really impress itself onto the actors mind until his daughter pointed it out during a performance of Fantasmic! Or, as Tom Hanks put it at a recent press day:

Theres fireworks and theres dancers, and at Disneyland the closing of the show is the Mark Twain steamboat comes by and all of the Disney characters are dancing on that steamboat: Belle and Sleeping Beauty and Mickey and everyone Mulan is there. They're all there, Captain Hook and Peter Pan. And I was there with my family -- my daughter, whos in her thirties, burst into tears. I said, Whats wrong? And she said, Look, Dad, look at the end of the boat. It was Woody and Buzz. She said, Dad, you will always be on that boat dancing for the rest of time, as long as Disneyland is here.

Dangit, Tom Hanks. I thought I could get through a whole day without getting emotional about Toy Story.

Honestly, Fantasmic is one of Disneylands biggest attractions. Its so popular, you can even get a Fast Pass for it, but for the average person (and you can tell how in Disney mode right now I am because I first typed avengers person), watching Fantasmic has a different meaning than it had for Hanks. Speaking to CinemaBlend and other outlets, Tom Hanks also revealed that he and co-star Tim Allen and all of the other actors who play toys in the Toy Story movies would never have had the opportunity to have that type of impact if they hadnt said yes to Toy Story when Pixar was still a fledgling company.

You know, thats more than just a cool thing. Its actually some sort of talisman I think we all carry with us now just because we were smart enough to say I dont think we should do this guys [in Woodys voice].

A lot of things in life are about being in the right place at the right time. Obviously, Tom Hanks would never have been offered Woody if he hadnt already been a notable name in Hollywood, so there was work put in too. But if he hadnt said yes, one of his most enduring roles would have been a reality with another actors name attached. Tom Hanks seems synonymous with Toy Story, but what if he had said no?

Its no secret that Pixars John Lasseter always wanted Tom Hanks in the role of Woody, although others were allegedly considered. Tom Hanks has mentioned before that what convinced him to join was Pixar using test footage from Turner and Hooch on an animated mock-up, which showed him he was the right fit for Woody.

Its also a credit to the Toy Story universe that Tom Hanks and Tim Allen kept returning for the various Pixar sequels, including the upcoming Toy Story 4, out on June 21.

When we talk about Fantasmic, reviews often compare the Disneyland version to the Disney World version. Or they explain the best way to avoid needing a Fast Pass or even the best locations to watch.

It's easy to get lost in the logistics of planning a trip like this, but the story from Tom Hanks not only cues all the awws, it really goes to show how much of a lasting legacy Disney and Pixar have built through collaboration and smart additions to the Disney Parks. Whether or not youre a huge Disney fan, theres certainly a responsibility behind that sort of work, and Hanks for one doesn't seem to take it for granted.
