Samuel L. Jackson Surprised Italian Marvel Fans At Avengers: Endgame Screening

This weekend Marvel fans the world over will be able to see a ridiculous number of their favorite stars on the big screen, as Avengers: Endgame collects characters from all corners of the beloved Cinematic Universe for one big blockbuster. Very few, however, will be able to watch the movie with a real Marvel star in attendance - but that's exactly what one screening in Italy recently got to experience thanks to a surprise appearance by Samuel L. Jackson:

Samuel L. Jackson has been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the very beginning - specifically ever since the original Iron Man when he first told Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark about the existence of the Avenger Initiative - but due to his shooting schedule he wasn't one of the stars who attended the world premiere of Avengers: Endgame earlier this week. That was almost surely a bummer for the actor, but the good news is that it didn't take him too long to catch a screening of the film.

Per Samuel L. Jackson's personal Instagram account, he recently made a special appearance at the Cinema Ambasciatori in Trieste, Italy where he surprised fans by ducking into a screening of Avengers: Endgame. Jackson is currently in the region doing work on both the upcoming The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard and reshoots for Spider-Man: Far From Home, and it seems that he got a break in his schedule long enough to squeeze in a cool surprise for Italian cinema fans.

Since appearing in Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson has been a consistent presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having notably signed an early nine picture deal with Marvel Studios when the franchise was still in its infancy. Jackson followed up his cameo as Nick Fury in the 2008 Jon Favreau film with a more substantial part in Iron Man 2, and then he was back on the big screen again as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The First Avenger. Following his turn in The Avengers, he made a special appearance in the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and was then in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age Of Ultron.

After that we didn't see much of him for a few years, but 2019 is pretty huge for Nick Fury. Not only did we just recently see him playing a major role in Captain Marvel, but this summer we expect him to have a key part in the aforementioned Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he will be recruiting Peter Parker (Tom Holland) for a mission while the high schooler is on a European field trip.

What will come next for him? Only time will tell. You'll just have to go see every Marvel movie from here on out and wait for Samuel L. Jackson's potential presence. And even if he doesn't appear on screen, he may wind up sitting next to you in your local theater.

Star Wars Exec Reveals A Lightsaber Goof In Empire Strikes Back

As fans get emotionally ready for Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker at years end, it may soon be time for a movie marathon of the series. And now when you revisit Empire Strikes Back you can point out this deep cut goof that sadly reminds fans of the franchises Earthly roots.

Lucasfilms Pablo Hidalgo, who is a creative executive in story development took to Twitter to share his catch during his rewatch of Episode IV. Take a look:

Do you see it? If you look really closely on the left screenshot, you can see an upside down encryption of New York on the top of the lightsaber. The empire strikes back indeed the Empire State Building that is! Why would the prop be made to include this anyway? Does New York even exist in the Star Wars universe? I guess the Big Apple made Lukes iconic lightsaber! Who knew, right?

The fact that it made the final cut means that the filmmakers probably never noticed it. In fact, no one did! Pablo Hidalgos find is the first mention of the goof in the 40 years Empire Strikes Back by the internets memory.

The screenshot is from the beginning of the film when Mark Hamills Luke is on Hoth, trapped inside the cave of a Wampa. Take a look below:

Ill never look at that scene the same way again. Or Lukes lightsaber for that matter. In the current Star Wars timeline Rey will be in the possession of this Lightsaber, which she will apparently repair after it was broken in The Last Jedi. To maintain continuity, maybe New York will still be on it? Hidalgo might have contemplated it - part of his job description is to help create and maintain a cohesive canon in the Star Wars universe.

New York just cant help but make its way into major movie franchise. Between it being a central hub for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and just about every 2000s rom-com, the city certainly likes the big screen attention. It couldnt just let Hoth have its moment, could it?

These days, it can be easy to forget that Star Wars started as a low budget project. Empire Strikes Back had an initial production budget of $18 million, which was actually 50% more than A New Hopes. In comparison, The Last Jedis budget was between $200 to $317 million. Fun goofs like this allow us to remember this.

Fans can now build their own lightsaber at the newly opened Star Wars Galaxys Edge at Disneyland. Owning your own metal, customizable saber costs $200 for guests, but comes with a 20 minute experience (check out CinemaBlends own review of the experience for more information on it).

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a fairly well-oiled machine at this point, with 21 movies and a decade of filmmaking under its belt. The studio has especially hit its stride with Phase Three, as every single release has been a box office and critical success. But there were a few bumps in the road, especially James Gunn's firing and eventual reinstatement as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

James Gunn was fired in July after offensive tweets from a decade ago resurfaced, and Disney attempted to distance itself from that narrative. But considering how much of Gunn is infused with the Guardians franchise, it put the future of the threequel in jeopardy. James' brother Sean Gunn plays Kraglin and stands in for Rocket during filming, and therefore discovered the news early. As he tells it:

I was aware before it was announced, a little bit before. I know that they were, they wanted to get the timing right in terms of when the announcement was made. Like I was saying before, in Hollywood, things don't ever happen until they happen, you know? So I was aware that it was probably going to happen, but I was never sure until I actually saw it in the news. But I was pretty sure for, let's just say for a little while.

The public was shocked by James Gunn's return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it doesn't look like Sean Gunn was. He saw the plan in the works for some time before it was official, although he found out about the final decision in the news just like everyone else. I guess it pays to be related to the subject of such a major story.

Sean Gunn's comments to Comic Book show that the deal with James Gunn went back quite some time. It came out of nowhere for the public, but was likely a long process filled with red tape and legalese. It was certainly a bold choice for Marvel to do an about-face, and bring Gunn back into the fold. What's more, the director recently signed on to helm The Suicide Squad for DC, so there was probably extra contracts and scheduling issues as part of the deal.

It stands to reason that Sean Gunn would be privy to more information than most, as its his sibling who is the mind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. On top of hearing about it from his brother, Sean is also an important cast member of the property. While he's not a bonafide member of the member, Kraglin has had a supporting role in the first two movies. What's more, Sean also does the motion capture work for Rocket on set, with Bradley Cooper eventually stepping into the studio to record dialogue, and extensive visual affects bringing the character to life.

Sean Gunn also played Rocket during Avengers: Endgame filming, with the blockbuster arriving April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

What Will Happen To Fox Searchlight If Disney Acquires It?

Some significant changes are coming in the world of entertainment following Disney's' decision to possibly purchase 21st Century Fox. The move has raised questions about the future of certain Fox properties, including the Oscar-winning Fox Searchlight brand. Alas, it sounds like fans should not worry, as Disney seems to think that Searchlight is fine just the way it is right now. During an appearance at Disney's Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, Disney CEO Bob Iger explained:

We have every intention once the acquisition is approved to maintain the business of Fox Searchlight. We think they're in the business of making high quality films. We don't have any plans right now to change what they do. Frankly, we think they're doing just fine.

Fox Searchlight has become well-known as one of Hollywood's premier brands in recent years. The studio currently serves as the prestige side of the entertainment giant's film division, offering up strong Oscar-bait in a vein similar to other awards-worthy studios like A24 or The Weinstein Company in its prime. Following a very strong 2017 (which saw Fox Searchlight produce films like The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), it seems that Disney has no intention of messing with a formula that appears to work. The Shape of Water's Best Picture win should pretty much speak for itself.

With that said, one thing not explicitly established by Bob Iger's remarks at Disney's Annual Meeting (via Variety) is how the bigger Fox brands could change after the transition takes place. Many fans already assume that it could lead to properties like the X-Men franchise and the Fantastic Four integrating with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Disney has yet to lay out specific changes that will take place when all is said and done.

Of course, now we have to wait and see if the Disney-Fox deal will even go through in the first place. Though the sale was officially confirmed, the landmark business decision will still have to go through a series of regulatory processes in the federal government to make sure that everything involved in the situation is copacetic. If that happens, Disney will then take full ownership of the Fox properties that it recently purchased. Until that happens, we have to treat all of this in hypothetical terms and take any unconfirmed news with a healthy grain of salt.
