Solos Paul Bettany Doesnt Consider The Standalone Star Wars Film A Failure

Solo: A Star Wars Story was a movie that a lot of people felt was disappointing. It had siginificant issues behind the scenes while in production and, while the critical reviews were fairly solid, the box office was certainly not up to the usual standards of a Star Wars movie. Paul Bettany, who played the role of Dryden Vos in the movie, was quite shocked by the negative reaction that Solo produced, as he personally thought the movie was great. According to Bettany...

I loved the movie. I went to see the movie and I loved it. I knew some real dyed-in-the-wool nerd fans, Ryan Adams, for instance, who was like, 'It's so fantastic, I love it!' and then he went to see it again. I took him to the premiere and then he went to see it again. It was confusing to me. I thought the story was so great, I thought the execution was so great, so it was surprising, to me.

Paul Bettany certainly isn't alone in his feelings toward Solo: A Star Wars Story as a lot of people did love it, but certainly he does seem to be in the minority. The film just didn't seem to drum up the sort of enthusiasm that we usually see with Star Wars. Many factors have been given for this, from the fact that Star Wars: The Last Jedi had only been released six months previously to trepidation from fans due to the fact that Lucasfilm changed directors in the middle of filming.

However, while Paul Bettany may not understand why people had such a reaction to the film, he's ultimately not too worried. As he points out to MTV, the movie still made a ton of money, nearly $400 million worldwide to be exact. Beyond that, because it's a Star Wars movie, while people may have sat it out initially, eventually everybody is going to see it.

It's also peculiar being in a movie that makes hundreds of millions of dollars and people say, 'It's just not enough.' The thing with Star Wars is eventually everybody on the planet's gonna see that movie and I really am proud of it and I loved playing Dryden Vos. I loved him. He's delicious.

Paul Bettany certainly has a point. Solo is the number seven movie of the year at the domestic box office and number 11 worldwide, which is nothing to sneeze at. However, due to the excessive reshoots that took place around the change in directors, the cost of the film became much higher than anticipated.

The next chance for people to watch Solo: A Star Wars Story is coming up as the movie is set to be released on Digital and Blu-ray next month. There's a good chance those who might not have been willing to shell out for a full price movie ticket might take the chance on a digital rental to see how the film actually turned out.

Mortal Engines Has A Hidden Machine That Makes Food Out Of Poo

Mortal Engines Has A Hidden Machine That Makes Food Out Of Poo

Production design can sometimes be an underappreciated artform. It's an incredibly detailed part of the filmmaking process, and yet a lot of those bits of minutiae are either relegated to the distant background or never even appear on the big screen at all. As it turns out, the upcoming Mortal Engines is a prime example of this, as actress Hera Hilmar recently revealed that there is one sequence that subtly hides a machine that makes food out of excrement:

I found it very funny that in Scuttlebutt there was a machine in the kitchen in the background that you don't really see where food was being made out of poo. And it actually was visually moving and stuff, and I was just like, 'Who made this?' They went through with it, it's actually working, and it's not even really featured. And I was just like, 'Wow.'

Scuttlebutt is one of the mechanized, roaming cities featured in Mortal Engines -- one that heroes Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) and Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) find themselves inhabiting toward the middle of the movie. It's ultimately revealed as a site of some danger and drama for the protagonists, with certain individuals proving to not be super trustworthy, but apparently there is a bit of weirdness going on behind the action as well, as the denizens have evidently figured out a way to recycle their food in the post-apocalyptic world.

It was during the Los Angeles press day for Mortal Engines last week that I found out about this very odd machine, specifically while sitting down with stars Hera Hilmar and Jihae -- who plays the helpful fugitive Anna Fang in the feature. Having personally visited the set of the film last year when it was still in production, and seen a lot of the wonderful behind-the-scenes details, I asked the duo if they had a favorite element that audiences may not actually see in the finished movie. Hilmar was quick to point out the food-to-poo device, and made it clear that she is still puzzled by the mind that brought it into existence.

On a practical level, however, one can understand why a machine like this makes at least some sense in the world of Mortal Engines. It's a society where resources are scarce, and folks have to do what they can in order to survive -- even if that means trying to recover any kind of nutritional value they can from waste. It's absolutely disgusting, sure, but there is a long, long history of people doing anything they can to survive in horrible conditions.

That's all pretty gross, but Jihae's contribution to the conversation at the very least introduced some beauty into the mix. Her favorite hidden details can be found in the movie both on her weaponry and her ship, the Jenny Haniver, as they each contain personal elements that she found further tied her to the character:

For me, they had the gun, the intricate designs of the gun and the swords was amazing. They realized I was South Korean by birth and they put in the national Korean bird on the gun, and wrote Korean writing on there. And they also, within Jenny Haniver, they put a feline - knowing that was my spirit animal. It's really nice attention to detail.

You can watch Hera Hilmar and Jihae discuss the poop machines and intricate details of Mortal Engines by clicking play on the video below:

Mortal Engines, directed by Christian Rivers and produced by Peter Jackson, also stars Hugo Weaving, Stephen Lang, Colin Salmon, and Leila George, is set to arrive in theaters this Friday, December 14th. The Weinstein Company Reportedly Owes Quentin Tarantino And More A Lot Of Money

The Weinstein Company Reportedly Owes Quentin Tarantino And More A Lot Of Money

We've known for a while that The Weinstein Company was heading into bankruptcy, and once TWC filed it only seemed to be a matter of time before the issue would be resolved. However, it's not going to be easy. Filing for bankruptcy is a complicated process, especially when there are a slew of movies, actors, employees and projects in development on the line. This week, we learned that The Weinstein Company is taking bids in the hopes it can sell off some of its assets. However, this hasn't made Quentin Tarantino and a slew of other celebrities particularly happy. Here's what we know.

If The Weinstein Company sells off the assets in question, it could get the company like $310 million dollars, money TWC sorely needs. However, Quentin Tarantino and others are displeased about the company selling off properties as Tarantino and others feel they are still entitled to royalties related to titles they worked on under The Weinstein Company banner. According to THR, Quentin Tarantino has been a particularly vocal party in this dispute and has even sent off a letter explaining that he believes he is still owed a slew of royalties on movies he produced with The Weinstein Company. This includes The Hateful Eight, Grindhouse/Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained.

In fact, Tarantino's lawyers are expressly claiming that he is owed nearly $4.5 million in royalties. That rounds out to a whopping $2.5 million for The Hateful Eight, $1.25 million for the successful Django Unchained, and lesser but still important numbers for the other two movies ($575k for Inglorious Basterds and $300k for his work on Grindhouse.) Quentin Tarantino's request are at the top of the pile in terms of monetary wants, but he is by no means the only person in Hollywood that is not pleased about The Weinstein Company heading into bankruptcy and messing with contracts that were long ago laid out. His lawyers are on the case, but so are Leondardo DiCaprio's, Rachel McAdams,' Jennifer Lawrence's and even Brad Pitt's, and this seems to be just the tip of the iceberg in terms of celebrities asking for money.

Per reports, some actors and actresses are on the same page as Quentin Tarantino. Meryl Streep worked with The Weinstein Company on August: Osage County, and is similarly concerned about how agreements are just going to be transferred via auction, as is Brad Pitt, who worked with The Weinstein Company on Killing Them Softly.

This is just the latest in a slew of problems that have plagued The Weinstein Company in the time reports about producer Harvey Weinstein's behavior came to light. First, there was talk that the company would be bought out and would be able to avoid bankruptcy that way. That fell through. Then there have been comments and concerns about some of the projects that The Weinstein Company owns being stuck in holding patterns, unable to either be released if completed or put into production if already in development. Now, this wrinkle about assets that the company already produced has come into question. It's going to be some time before all of this is worked out, and we'll be here every step of the way.
