Infinity War's Josh Brolin Explains How Benedict Cumberbatch Motivated Him To Play Thanos

Marvel fixed it's long-standing "villain problem" by making an entire film about the villain. Josh Brolin brought Thanos to life in a way few have been able to do with motion capture characters, and we can apparently thank Benedict Cumberbatch for that. In a recent interview, Josh Brolin said that it was when he saw footage of Benedict Cumberbatch doing the motion capture work for Smaug in the Hobbit movies that he realized how serious motion capture work was, and that he wanted to do it. According to Brolin...

I saw Benedict Cumberbatch do, I think it was for The Hobbit, and I looked on YouTube when I was deciding whether I wanted to do it or not. And he [had] this mo-cap suit on, and he was in this big warehouse, and he's crawling around like a snake, snapping his tongue out, doing this incredible performance. And I saw that and I was like, 'Alright, that's the bar. This is not, like, bullshit. This is something you actually have to sink your teeth into.' Conviction, embarrassment, all that kind of stuff. Then I decided, yeah.

It's understandable that an actor might have reservations about doing motion capture work if they've never done it before. Traditionally they perform their craft with other actors on location or on sets that help create the atmosphere that gets them into character. When doing motion capture you don't even get to wear a costume that will make you feel like the person you're supposed to be. You wear a set of form-fitting pajamas covered in ping pong balls.

It seems that Josh Brolin's biggest concern, as he explained to Entertainment Weekly Radio, was that the part would somehow not be "real" acting, that he wouldn't be able to put himself out there the way he normally would due to the separation between him and the audience. However, when he saw Benedict Cumberbatch playing the part of a character that wasn't even human, and committing himself to it completely, he realized he could do the same.

Looks Like World War Z 2 Might Not Happen

Despite its troubled production, 2013s World War Z managed to be a commercial success for Paramount Pictures. Its $540 million worldwide haul made it the highest grossing zombie movie of all time, and shortly after its release, Paramount gave the green light to a sequel. But in the years since, World War Z 2 has been hit with numerous setbacks, and today brings word that its hit its biggest one yet, as the studio has pulled the plug on the project.

This latest update comes from The Playlist, which reported that Paramount Pictures decided to shut down World War Z 2 last night following several months of pre-production. Supposedly the sequels budget was part of the problem, as director David Fincher and his team were planning to make World War Z 2 for less than World War Zs budget of $190 million, the amount before the extensive reshoots occurred. However, Colliders own sources state that World War Z 2s budget was actually going to be more than its predecessors original budget, and that Fincher refused to budge on the amount. So there are conflicting claims regarding money, and its also unclear how long these budget issues had been brewing.

In early 2017, Paramount announced that World War Z 2 wouldnt come out until 2018 or 2019 at the latest. A few months later, David Fincher officially signed on to direct, but his work on the Netflix series Mindhunter resulted in the fall 2018 filming start date being pushed back to this upcoming summer. Until last night, the plan was for principal photography to stretch across five countries, including spending six months in Atlanta, Georgia. Now all of that has been scrapped, with other issues that reportedly came into play including how long had passed since World War Z came out and how the sequel couldnt be released in China since the country bans zombie-related content.

Now the big question is whether World War Z 2 is dead for good or if, like the classic zombie, it will rise back to life in the future. If Colliders report is accurate, David Fincher is now off the project, although apparently star Brad Pitt is still attached. Perhaps Paramount might revive World War Z 2 if it finds a new director that can deliver a unique follow-up within the budget that the studio prefers, but for now, its back in development hell.

2018 was a mixed year for Paramount financially. Both A Quiet Place and Mission: Impossible - Fallout exceeded expectations with their respective hauls, but on the flip side, Bumblebee and Annihilation, both of which received positive critical reception, underperformed at the box office. So it does make sense if Paramounts leadership was concerned about World War Z 2s budget and decided to put it on ice and focus on other high-profile projects (Star Trek 4 not being one of them). Last month, the studio gave the green light to Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8, which will be filmed back-to-back and see Christopher McQuarrie sitting in the directors chair again.

Colin Farrell Was Once So Hungover It Allegedly Took Him 56 Takes For One Minority Report Line

Being hungover isnt fun. Being hungover when you have to go to work is especially dreadful. But being brutally hungover and having to go to work on a major Hollywood motion picture is just a recipe for disaster. Actor Colin Farrell found out as much on the set of the 2002 film Minority Report, when he had to go to work the day after his 25th birthday celebration. Colin Farrell recalled the experience saying:

There were a couple of hairy days. I asked them with a great array of arrogance that they not work me the day after my birthday. I said, Please dont have me working on June 1st, because my birthday is May 31st. I thought a 100 million dollar film would at least listen to that request... but I worked.

Well, in his defense, he did try to warn them that he would be in no shape to film on June 1st. In hindsight, Colin Farrell admits the ludicrous and arrogant nature of this request, that a massive Hollywood movie with a schedule to keep to and a vast array of people working on it would move things around, potentially costing valuable time and money, just because he wanted to get wrecked for his birthday.

Colin Farrell did his best to get out of it, though as you might expect, the request of the 25-year-old actor was not honored and he indeed went to work on June 1st, as he told Mirror.

He didnt want to have to come to work in a dilapidated state, so he asked to have the day off. When that didnt work, did he choose not to party or take things a bit easier knowing he had work in the morning? No, no he didnt. He had the pre-cognitive sight to know it wouldnt turn out well, but couldnt stop himself.

Colin Farrell elaborated on what the hairy day after his birthday was like on the Minority Report set, saying:

It was a rough night and I didnt get any sleep. The line was, Im sure youve all grasped the fundamental paradoxical pre-crime methodology. I only know it now, still, 16 years later because it caused so much panic and anxiety. It should be on my tombstone. My sister was on the set that day and she had to leave the set after 56 takes. I was a disaster.

The combination of a rough night of birthday indulgences and no sleep resulted in Colin Farrell needing 56 takes to deliver one line in the film. One line. Steven Spielberg already has Oscars to his name, but he might be eligible for an honorary one here for having saintly patience as one of his young stars struggled through his lines to the tune of dozens of takes because he was irresponsibly hungover.

With the alliteration and the sequence of big words, you can see how Colin Farrells line as Danny Witwer in the film could be a bit of a tongue-twister to begin with. But if it was difficult to say before, Colin Farrell upped the difficulty by being completely hungover. Ironically, Javier Bardem could have starred as Danny Witwer in Minority Report, but he felt his English wasn't good enough at the time.

This resulted in what surely was an incredibly awkward and cringe-inducing scene where the actor struggled take after take to deliver the line. It practically sounds like it was scripted for a comedy with Colin Farrells sister being present on set that day and having to watch her brother go through that.

The result of all those takes and the trauma they caused is that Colin Farrell still remembers the line to this day. Well, basically anyways, as far as I can tell the line used in the final film was actually Im sure you all understand the legalistic drawback to pre-crime methodology.

Actor Colin Farrell has been quite open over the years about his struggles with drugs and alcohol, and although the 56 take disaster on Minority Report was bad, he says that it was one of the only instances where his lifestyle affected his work.
