Warner Bros. and DC have a hit on their hands with Aquaman, which is officially the highest grossing movie in the DCEU. The solo adventure takes place after the events of 2017's Justice League, yet none of the other heroes pop in for a cameo. This was obviously very intentional. Here's what director James Wan said when asked if he ever considered having anyone else from the Justice League appear in Aquaman.
No, I just feel like this is his standalone movie, just let it be about Aquaman. I feel like all the other characters have had so many movies; audiences have known all the other characters in all the other movies, all these different projects. Let this be Aquaman's time in the spotlight.
Being a connected cinematic universe, members of the Justice League show up in each other's movies from time to time. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice basically introduced all the heroes. Suicide Squad had a cameo from Flash and Batman. Wonder Woman had a letter from Bruce Wayne, if you want to count that, but otherwise Wonder Woman ran the show on her own.
However, Aquaman is the first DCEU movie after Justice League, which wasn't a smooth experience for the studio. People were curious how much or little Aquaman would reference the events and characters of that movie. It opted to go as little as possible, but for good reason.
James Wan told HuffPost that Superman, Batman, or any of the members of the Justice League don't show up in Aquaman because it would take the spotlight away from Arthur Curry. All the members of the League have had many of their own movies or TV shows at this point, but Aquaman has never had one all to himself. This is his first movie, so why not let him be the only superhero and get the attention he deserves?
I'd say that's good reasoning for not having any Justice League cameos in the movie. In the MCU, outside of post-credits scenes, most heroes usually don't cameo in each other's movies. If they do, it's for a more substantial role like Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming or everyone in Captain America: Civil War.
Additionally, Aquaman doesn't really address any of the events of the DCEU. There's literally one throwaway line about defeating Steppenwolf and then it's off to the undersea races. I think that was for the best, and it'll be interesting to see how Shazam! handles its connections to the DCEU.

Disney's New Streaming Service May Finally Have A Name
Disney has spoken about their forthcoming streaming service a lot, but one thing they've neglected to do is give it a name. We've just been referring to as the Disney Streaming Service whenever it's talked about, but it may actually have a name which Disney CEO Bob Iger has revealed. He, at least, is not calling it the Disney Streaming Service. He calls it Disney Play.
While no official announcement has been made regarding what the name of the new service will be, Variety points out that Disney's top guy is referring to the service as Disney Play. He used the term during a recent Disney earnings call, which would seem to indicate that it's either the current name of the system internally or simply a name that Iger himself likes. Of course, if the boss likes the name, there's a decent chance that means the name could end up being the actual name of the service.
Although, without any real indication, it's also possible that Bob Iger is using the name specifically because it isn't what the streaming service will be called. It's a way to refer to the service by a short and clear title without revealing what it will actually be called before it's time to reveal the name. It's certainly easier than calling it the Disney Streaming Service all the time.
Disney Play is a decent name, though it's one that seems a little unoriginal. The Starz cable channel, which Disney has an existing deal with, uses that name for its streaming element and, of course, Google uses that name for its entire online store. I would honestly expect something a bit more original from Disney.
Disney Play is one of the more hotly anticipated new online products in recent memory. Following Disney's major acquisitions in recent years including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and most recently 21st Century Fox, Disney simply has the largest library of any major studio which potentially makes the new Disney service incredibly attractive to consumers. While it is clear that not all of Disney's major titles will be available on day one, existing deals mean that some Disney products will be licensed elsewhere for an undisclosed period of time, it does seem like eventually, the service will be the only place to find things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anything from Star Wars. In addition to the existing material, a number of original movies and TV series are being produced.
Disney has a massive existing fan base it seems like a no-brainer that the majority of them will be jumping into Disney Play pretty much at day one. The service is expected to launch somewhere in the second half of 2019, though an exact date has yet to be revealed.

Looks Like Mark Hamill May Have Landed A Role In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3
One of the hardest jobs in Hollywood has to be casting, figuring out exactly who would be right for a given role, and then trying to lock that person down and get them to commit. Or you could just ask on Twitter. That's what may have just happened live on social media in front of the world as a fan asked writer/director James Gunn to cast Mark Hamill in a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, for no other reason beyond the fact that it would be cool. Gunn seemed to think that, not only was this a good idea, but it would actually be fairly easy to consider, and Mark Hamill seems to be game.
Following Mark Hamill's statement that he would be interested, James Gunn simply says "let's do it." There's a bit of confusion regarding getting Hamill's contact information over to James Gunn because DM's are confusing, but it all appears to be on the level. Mark Hamill and James Gunn could actually be having a conversation right now about a potential role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. That sounds awesome. Thank god for social media.
Seeing Mark Hamill in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be fantastic. James Gunn has made room for cameos for everybody from Nathan Fillion and David Hasselhoff to Troma Entertainment's Lloyd Kaufman in the past, so I'm sure there are going to be roles available like that for Hamill. Of course, with the movie at least two years away, the film is probably in an early enough stage that perhaps Hamill could take a more significant part. Mark Hamill for Adam Warlock in the MCU? Regardless of the size of the part, it would be great to see Hamill in Guardians Vol. 3. I think Josh Gad probably put it best when responding to the initial Twitter thread.
The only potential issue could be scheduling. There's a pretty good chance that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is eyeing a release date of May 1, 2020, and with Star Wars: Episode IX, coming out in December of the previous year, there's a decent chance filming could be happening on the two movies around the same time. This, of course, assumes Mark Hamill has a role in Episode IX, and while I'd say it's likely that he does, it probably won't be all that large, which could mean the scheduling could work out. Social media can be a pretty terrible place a lot of the time, but if this ends up happening it will make up for some of it.

Johnny Depp Reportedly Being Dropped From The Pirates Of The Caribbean Reboot
It looks like the rumored Pirates of the Caribbean reboot, if it happens, will be moving forward without the franchise's biggest star. One of the biggest questions about the potential reboot was whether or not it would include Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow. Now, one source is claiming that Depp is done with the films. Stuart Beattie, who was one of the writers of the original Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, has seemingly confirmed Depp's exit, saying...
I think he's had a great run. Obviously, he's made that character his own and it's become the character he's most famous for now. And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it's been great for him, it's been great for us, so I'm just very, very happy about it.
Stuart Beattie made the comments to DailyMailTV and reportedly nodded when asked about the possibility of Depp's departure, followed by the comments above.
It's unclear just how "in the know" Stuart Beattie is at the moment. While he's been credited on every subsequent Pirates of the Caribbean movie as having helped to create the characters, he was only directly involved in writing the first movie. It's possible that he is aware that any potential reboot won't be using any characters he created, which would include Captain Jack Sparrow. He could also simply be making an assumption that the word "reboot" means that Jack Sparrow is done. At this point, the word reboot means so many things in Hollywood that this is far from certain.
Of course, that would also mean that the potential reboot, which Disney has reportedly met with Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about writing, would be a complete start from scratch, with no existing characters making the leap to the new movies. It didn't sound like there was much chance of getting Keira Knightley back again anyway.
The news of a potential reboot was somewhat surprising. While the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been consistent money makers for Disney, regardless of whether or not they were critically received, the current rumor was that Disney was considering another sequel.
The implication, whether accurate or not, is that Disney may be looking to make a Depp-less Pirates movie because the actor has been something of a lightning rod for controversy in recent months. The actor has been involved in multiple personal lawsuits over his finances and his relationship with Amber Heard has been tabloid fodder that has included accusations of abuse. Warner Bros. was criticized for bringing Johnny Depp on board the Fantastic Beasts franchise and there's a good chance that if the family-friendly Disney brought him back for yet another film, they would get a similar backlash.
Stuart Beattie takes a positive view of the franchise moving on without the characters he helped build.
There's that saying, don't frown because it's over, smile because it happened. And the fact that they're rebooting something that you did, means that you did something that is worth rebooting. So I tend to look at it as the glass half full and it's an honor to be rebooted.
It's no shock Disney thinks the franchise is worth rebooting, it's made them $4.5 billion at the box office.
Of course, if the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is in line for a complete reboot, one then has to wonder what direction it could take. The film could still be set in the existing film universe, a Caribbean where Jack Sparrow exists, just simply will not appear. We could also see a prequel that takes place before the events of the existing franchise. There has been lore and backstory set up that could be used, allowing the new films to connect to the existing ones without having to use any of the characters. However, it could just as easily start with something entirely fresh.
The original film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl found a story in the original theme park ride, which has an opening sequence full of skeletons, including one that is still standing at the wheel of a ship and another that appears to be drinking. These images inspired the skeleton pirates which Jack Sparrow faced off against. Other elements of the ride were inserted as easter eggs, such as the famous dog holding the key to a prison cell..
I would certainly hope that Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese would go back to the ride to look for inspiration for their new film. Of course, thanks to the popularity of the film franchise, much of the ride has been taken over by Captain Jack Sparrow and the iconic Hans Zimmer theme music, so that might be more difficult.
Still, as I have previously written, there is one place in the ride with a lot of potential, an element of the attraction that's fairly new, and thus has never been part of the previous films.
One of the most well-known vignettes of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction is the auction sequence, where one pirate is auctioning off the women of a recently plundered town to other pirates. Recently, the decision was made to update that moment, and the shapely redhead animatronic that was getting cat calls from the pirates before is now a pirate herself, aptly named Redd.
This seems like the perfect character to set a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie around. It doesn't require recycling already used ride material for the film and is a character as far away from Captain Jack Sparrow as you can get. Disney has also invested a lot in Redd. In addition to being in the ride itself, she's also a walk around character you can get a photo with at Disneyland.
Of course, all of this may be premature as it's not confirmed that Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have agreed to write a Pirates of the Caribbean movie at all. Disney may certainly go looking for other writers if they turn it down, but regardless, we're still waiting on confirmation that this reboot is actually going to happen.

Kevin Feige Seems Open To Talks With Adam McKay Over Silver Surfer
Last week, Vice writer and director Adam McKay expressed interested in making a Silver Surfer movie, and since Norrin Radd is among the many characters who will finally be able to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe once the Fox-Disney merger is finalized, that means McKay would need to chat with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about that. While such a project currently (or at least publicly) isn't in the works for the MCU, Feige appears open to the idea of collaborating with McKay again. When asked if McKay had gotten in touch with him about a Silver Surfer movie, Feige responded:
I've not gotten a call, but I've seen Adam tonight and at a number of these awards and he is not only, as everybody knows, an incredibly smart guy, he is a honest to goodness fan. And, you know, he did a lot of sort of behind-the-scenes help with us on the first Ant-Man film, and have you seen Vice? Little cameo. Little Galactus cameo that we helped him get. So I look forward to speaking with him more.
Yes, as bizarre as it may sound to those of you who haven't seen Vice, the Dick Cheney biopic did indeed feature an image of Galactus, Devourer of Worlds and Silver Surfer's former master, further showing off Adam McKay's comic book cred. As Kevin Feige pointed out while speaking with MTV News, McKay already has a prior relationship with Marvel Studios for his work rewriting Ant-Man with Paul Rudd, and the company actually approached McKay about succeeding James Gunn as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He turned down that opportunity, but maybe he and Feige could work out some kind of arrangement with Silver Surfer.
So far, Silver Surfer's only live action appearance has been in 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, where he was physically portrayed by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne. It was rumored last year that Silver Surfer would appear in Avengers: Infinity War, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo later debunked that claim, noting that he was among the characters they couldn't use. It was also reported that 20th Century Fox is developing a Silver Surfer movie, although with the studio set to soon be absorbed into the Disney empire... I mean, family, who knows if that particular project will still be moving forward.
As far as what kind of Silver Surfer movie he wants to make, Adam McKay said he wanted to make it a visual spectacle that would be like the MCU's version of Speed Racer. Considering how cosmically crazy the Silver Surfer mythology is by even by Marvel standards, this sounds like a decent basic concept to start with. And at the very least, a Silver Surfer movie would ideally finally give us a faithful adaptation of Galactus, as opposed to another giant cloud.
As far as what the future holds for the MCU cosmically speaking, The Eternals and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are in development for Phase 4, although the latter is arriving much later than originally planned due to Disney and Marvel not rushing with finding someone to fill James Gunn's directing shoes. Though he was introduced in the Fantastic Four comic book, Silver Surfer's had numerous solo adventures out in space that a movie could pull from, so he'd be a welcome addition to the MCU's cosmic realm.
