What Genre Christopher Nolan Thinks Each Of His Batman Movies Belongs To

The movies in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy might tell one cohesive story, but compared to most sequels, there are many more differences in tone, direction and structure. It's pretty clear to careful movie viewers that the director was shooting for very different things with each film, and now, he's gone on record as saying he doesn't even think they belong to the same genres.

Christopher Nolan made the comments this week while he was at the Cannes Film Festival. According to Total Film, he argued Batman Begins is a hero's journey movie, The Dark Knight is a crime movie that could be compared to Michael Mann's Heat and The Dark Knight Rises is a war film. He thinks genres are defined by the adversary the hero is battling. In Batman Begins, that's a mentor character in Ra's al Ghul. In The Dark Knight, it's a terrorist in The Joker, and in The Dark Knight Rises, it's a militaristic figure in Bane.

I suspect some people might quibble with whether some of those movies can be completely defined to those categories, but the larger idea of splitting the films into separate genres goes a long way to explain why so many smart people have very different takes on the quality of each. The Dark Knight may have gotten heaps of praise upon its release, much of it about Heath Ledger's mesmerizing performance, but there are many people, especially film critics, who will aggressively argue Batman Begins is the superior film. The response to The Dark Knight Rises is pretty polarizing, as well. The film almost hit 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, but as the years have gone by, more than a healthy percentage have gotten more open with calling it a disappointment, while others are still convinced it was a great way to end the series. They're very different movies, and comparing them to each other to achieve a generally agreed upon rank is so hard because of that.

Whether The Dark Knight Rises is better because Christopher Nolan tried to make a war movie or not, the larger takeaway here is, in my opinion, it's better for a sequel to try for something new than bend over backwards to try and recreate the exact same tone and basic story arc of the original. That might please the most fans if the movie is able to hit all the same notes as the original in an equally compelling way, but that's really, really hard to do. Instead, it's better to embrace a new challenge and let the film breath on its own.

The Dark Knight can be so chaotic at parts, precisely because Batman Begins really takes its time letting us learn about Bruce Wayne and where he's coming from. If you have a long-term vision in mind, you can use one movie to set up another. Obviously sequels have been doing that from a story perspective for years, but the better ones do it from a tone perspective, as well.

Regardless of where you stand on each movie, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy changed the movie industry. It paved the way for so many of the superhero successes we've seen recently, and the director should be praised for taking chances and doing things his own way.

With Matt Reeves The Batman finally starting to take off, fans have been putting their heads together and drumming up some ideas for the new cast. Since the writer/director has already teased the inclusion of a rogues gallery, there are tons of possibilities for our favorite actors to portray a few of the Dark Knights iconic villains. So, solve this puzzle: what about Simon Pegg as The Riddler? One artist has imagined the Mission: Impossible actor as the enigmatic Edward Nygma. Check it out:

I dont know about you, but Im into this! The fan art from ShatterverseEnt (via Reddit) is very much in line with the vision of The Batman, which Matt Reeves has said will be a noir tale. Since the Caped Crusader will also be tapping into his detective skills more than ever, facing the sneaky clues the Riddler leaves behind could certainly fit right into this kind of narrative.

The last time audiences saw The Riddler on the big screen in live action, he was cleverly played by Jim Carrey and worked with Tommy Lee Jones Two-Face, opposite Val Kilmers Bruce Wayne in 1995s Batman Forever. Riddler is a great choice to be featured among other villains and Pegg would certainly deliver a completely different take on the character than Carrey.

He could pull off healthy combination of sinister and entertaining. Pegg is no stranger to delivering a solid performance in beloved blockbusters, such as Scotty in the new Star Trek films and as Benji in the Mission: Impossible movies. The actor has also been a part of some comedy classics including Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Paul.

With the recent announcement of upcoming Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 coming in summer 2021 and 2022, Simon Pegg could be booked for the foreseeable future if he signs on for the final two installments to be helmed by Christopher McQuarrie. However, since Star Trek 4 doesnt look to be happening after being in development hell since 2015, The Batman could serve as a sweet replacement if he has the time for it.

So far, we know that Matt Reeves The Batman will not be featuring Ben Affleck as the titular hero. Bruce Wayne will be reportedly be played by a younger actor who has yet to be cast. Among the rogues gallery, Penguin will likely be one of the villains facing Batman. Well have to wait and see if Riddler ends up joining as well.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is chock full of heroes, but few have endeared themselves to audiences quite like Vin Diesel's Groot. The walking and talking tree from Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will make his next MCU appearance in Avengers: Infinity War, and to celebrate that release, Diesel decided to personally surprise a lucky Marvel fan as Groot and deliver some cool toys. Check out the video of the encounter below!

With less than two weeks to go until the premiere of Avengers: Infinity War, that "lucky fan" won a delivery of Marvel merchandise from the studio. To help deliver the gifts and get her into the proper Marvel spirit, Vin Diesel (sporting a delightfully nerdy Riddick T-shirt, no less) decided to show up with an awesome Groot-themed mask and a Groot plush toy. If you are one of the many people who is currently looking forward to the world premiere of Avengers: Infinity War, then this might make you incredibly jealous.

One other thing that this video briefly takes a moment to address is the fact that Groot will not be a baby anymore in Avengers: Infinity War. Vin Diesel specifically refers to the latest incarnation of the character as "Teenage Groot" (who apparently still has an affinity for video games in the new film), which means that we will continue to see the young, brash, and somewhat rude version of the character who gave Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) a hard time during one of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's many post-credits scenes.

Of course, we will have to wait and see how sassy teenage Groot continues to evolve during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, because he is about to encounter some characters who are unlike anything or anyone that he has seen before. Specifically, Teen Groot may spend quite a bit of time with Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth) in addition to Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) in Avengers: Infinity War, as the God of Thunder may still be recovering from an encounter with Thanos (Josh Brolin) when the Guardians find him floating through space. We haven't seen much formal interplay between Thor, Groot and Rocket just yet, but after the comedy of films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok, we cannot wait to see what happens when these characters get together.

Vin Diesel will once again bring his vocal chops to the role of Groot later this month when Avengers: Infinity War premieres in theaters on April 27.
